Webinar Outlining Workers Rights When Participating in Peaceful Protests Available Now

Workplace Fairness is #1 Most Comprehensive Online Resource for Information About Workplace Rights

Dear Journalists, please share this information with your readers.

WASHINGTON (June 21, 2021) – Workplace Fairness continues to provide resources for workers about their rights, including about participating in peaceful protests.

The national nonprofit, Workplace Fairness (WF), advocates for workers' rights and millions of workers in all 50 states rely on Workplace Fairness for information about their workplace rights.

During a webinar on February 4, employment lawyers Andrew Melzer and Whittney Barth at the law firm of Sanford, Heisler & Sharp, LLP discussed their research on whether employees can be fired for participating in peaceful protests. A recording of the webinar can be found on the WF YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wpy5wdyVbxw.

The presentation was based on an article written by the attorneys which can be found here: https://www.illinoislawreview.org/online/whether-employees-can-be-fired-for-participating-in-peaceful-protests/. This article explores whether employees fired for engaging in peaceful protests would have a valid legal action for wrongful termination, and examines potential legal avenues for bringing such a claim.

WF warmly thanks Andrew Melzer, Whittney Barth, and the law firm of Sanford, Heisler & Sharp for their contribution to enriching the workers’ rights community and supporting workers.

WF Note: You can help us in our effort to support employees, as they navigate many unchartered waters, by making a donation today. No amount is too small or too large.

About Workplace Fairness

Workplace Fairness is a nonprofit organization that provides information, education and assistance to individual workers and their advocates nationwide and promotes public policies that advance employee rights.

The organization’s mission is to educate workers and their advocates about workplace rights and options for resolving workplace problems and that policymakers, members of the business community and the public at large view the fair treatment of workers as both good business practice and sound public policy.

Private Interview Opportunities

Individual interviews with Workplace Fairness staff and members of the Board of Directors can be scheduled to discuss workplace issues for workers and employers.

Workplace Fairness works toward these goals by:

  • Making comprehensive information about workers' rights—free of legal jargon—readily available to workers and to advocates and organizations that assist workers;
  • Providing resources to support the work of legal services organizations, community-based organizations, law schools and private attorneys that provide free legal information and services to low-income workers;
  • Presenting the employee perspective in publications, policy debates and public discussion.

A 2017 Webby Award Honoree, the award-winning Workplace Fairness website has newly updated information throughout the site, as part of the web's most comprehensive resource educating workers about their legal rights in the workplace.
